We love it here — and we're paying attention
Big changes are happening on our waterfront, and some "temporary" promises have quietly become permanent. We keep a clear, sourced record so neighbours can stay informed and engaged.
Strong neighbourhoods aren't an accident
Researchers call it collective efficacy — the mix of mutual trust between neighbours and a shared willingness to act for the common good. It's the quiet thing that decides whether a street pulls together when something needs doing. Every cleanup, social, item-loan and check-in is us building exactly that, on purpose.
Collective efficacy is the ability of neighbours to build trust, set shared expectations, and mobilise for the common good (Sampson, Raudenbush & Earls, 1997).
Across the research, neighbourhoods high in collective efficacy consistently experience lower violent crime — first shown in the landmark Project on Human Development in Chicago Neighborhoods.
A neighbourhood's track record of acting together is the single strongest factor in overcoming local problems — even where the odds are stacked against it (Weffer, 2004).
Studies measure a strong neighbourhood by asking simple things — the kind of place where…
- neighbours get together to deal with a problem
- it feels close-knit and people look out for one another
- you could borrow $30 in an emergency from someone nearby
- adults keep an eye out so kids are safe
- people around here are willing to help

Join the association
The Harbourview Residents Association represents the blocks bounded by Shore Road and Windmill Road, from Lyle Street to Geary Street — tucked under the Macdonald Bridge along the Dartmouth waterfront. Meetings, cleanups, the item library and keeping an eye on the neighbourhood are all run by neighbours.
